In the middle of this snowy February, groundwork has begun on a replacement nursing home in the Edmundston area.  The project was originally promised more than three years ago by former New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham.

The 180-bed Les Résidences Jodin in Edmundston will replace two others, Foyer Saint-Joseph de Saint-Basile and Villa Des Jardins. Those two nursing care facilities are about 10 kilometers apart and have a combined total of 156 beds.

New Brunswick's Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé paid a visit to the construction site in her home town, saying the new nursing home is as meaningful to the community as it is to the seniors who will call it home.

Dubé said, "Les Résidences Jodin will enhance the quality of life of our seniors because it will allow residents to remain close to their families, friends and community."

The Edmundston nursing home is expected to be completed by the fall of 2014 at an estimated cost of $48.5 million.
