Two adults and a juvenile are facing drug charges after a report of suspicious activity in Canaan.

Two Men and Teen Charged with Drug Crimes

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Joel Sweetser, a transient from the Bangor area, and issued summons to 29-year-old Austin Wing and a 17-year-old juvenile.

Deputies responded to a call on Shady Lane around 1:11 am Thursday where they found three individuals sitting off the road in a Nissan Altima.

Open Alcohol Container and Bail Conditions

“An open alcoholic beverage container was observed between the legs of Joel Sweetser. In January 2026, Sweetser was arrested for OUI in Penobscot County and has bail conditions which allow for searches of his person and vehicle,” according to the Sheriff's Office.

Meth Seized after Vehicle Search

The vehicle was searched and 24.6 grams of meth was seized.

Teen and Adult Male had Drugs in Their Possession

The Juvenile was searched and Deputies found 34 grams of meth. Wing was also in the possession of illegal drugs. Sweetser was searched and no drugs were found on his person.

Man Faces Charges for Aggravated Drug Trafficking

Sweetser was arrested and charged with Aggravated Drug Trafficking and Violation of Conditions of Release. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail and held without bail.

Teen Charged with Unlawful Drug Trafficking

The juvenile was issued a summons for Unlawful Drug Trafficking and was released to a guardian.

Third Person Charged with Drug Possession

Wing was also issued a summons for Drug Possession and released from the scene.

Additional Charges Pending as the Investigation Continues

More charges are expected in the case as the ongoing investigation remains active.
