Maine State Police say a 20-year-old Allagash man faces drug charges after methamphetamine was allegedly found in his car following a traffic stop.

At around 2 a.m. Sunday, Trooper Matt Curtin was conducting traffic enforcement in the town of St. Francis and attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Route 161. Police say instead of pulling over to the side of the road, the operator drove in behind the former St. Francis School building before coming to a stop.

Trooper Curtin identified the driver as 20-year-old Joseph Hafford of Allagash. The investigation revealed that Hafford had been smoking marijuana and tried to dispose of it prior to his interaction with Trooper Curtin.

Hafford was allegedly found to be in possession of methamphetamine and numerous items of drug paraphernalia related to the use of methamphetamine. Police say the vehicle was impounded, and later searched, where additional items of drug paraphernalia were seized.

Hafford was arrested and transported to the Fort Kent Police Department where he posted bail. He was charged with Felony Possession of Methamphetamine as well as Use and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Hafford is scheduled to appear in Fort Kent District Court on April 1.
