Led by senior guard Chandler Guerrette with 33 points, Presque Isle defeated the western Maine champion 51-44 Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Lake Region controlled the first half of the game, but a long 3-pointer by Presque Isle’s Megan Ireland at the halftime buzzer brought the score to 29-21.  That seemed to turn the tide for the Wildcats and they launched the second half with a tougher defensive strategy and gained momentum, pulling to within 3 points at the end of the third quarter.

Chandler Guerrette scored the first two baskets in the fourth quarter giving Presque Isle their first lead of the game. With under a minute to play, Hannah Graham put in her only basket of the night then stole the in-bounds pass and was fouled.  Graham hit both free throws to make the Wildcat’s lead 49-44.

Guerrette also sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds and triumphantly held the ball in her hands as the game ended.

It was Presque Isle High School´s second girls´ basketball state championship in a row--both against Lake Region.

There will be a reception for the Presque Isle Lady Wildcats on Monday, March 4 at 7:00PM in the Presque Isle High School lower gymnasium.
