Two Men Appear in Grand Falls Court in Ecstasy Case

Two men appeared in court in Grand Falls Thursday after police uncovered two drug-making labs this week in northwestern New Brunswick and Quebec.

Police say 66-year-old Daniel Cozak and his son 26-year-old Charles Cozak, both from Québec, were arrested during a search at a home in Lac-Baker, New Brunswick.

RCMP executed the search warrant in the early morning hours Wednesday at a residence in Lac-Baker where they found a sophisticated, industrial scale clandestine lab. Police estimate that the lab had the capacity to produce 1.5 million pills of the synthetic drug known as ecstasy.

Daniel Cozak was a former chemistry professor at Quebec's Laval University, according to a report by the CBC.  He and his son Charles remain in custody and will be transferred to Québec for an expected court appearance on Friday.

Another son, 26-year-old Samuel Cozak and a 55-year-old were also arrested in Quebec in connection with the drug operation.

RCMP said the production capacity of the clandestine lab in Lac-Baker had the potential to have major negative impacts on communities across the country and possibly elsewhere.
