The Mapleton, Castle Hill & Chapman Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire Friday morning near Route 227 in Mapleton.

Fire Chief Rich Wark tells our newsroom that Vaughn Littlefield and his wife were in an older model Jeep Cherokee on the Moose Ridge Road around 10:30 a.m. when smoke started coming from the engine.

Littlefield pulled over near the State Road intersection as the vehicle burst into flames.

The incident sparked a small grass fire in a ditch which scorched a tree, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. The Jeep was a total loss, Wark said.

Littlefield had reportedly sold the vehicle and the new owner was planning to pick it up on Saturday.

Six firefighters were on scene with one engine.  No one was injured.
