This Highway Has More Fatalities Than Any Other in Maine
While our Pine Tree State is generally known as one of the safest, we do have some pretty dangerous stretches of road—including this one.
We’re only a little biased when we say that Maine has the best drivers in the country—skilled, patient, and downright impressive behind the wheel. But even with the best drivers around (again, only a little biased), there are still some roads in Vacationland that can be a real challenge.
Now that we've got that sorted, how do we actually determine what the most dangerous road in Maine is? And what metrics are used to make that decision?
ALOT Travel compiled their list of the most dangerous roads in each state by analyzing the average number of fatalities that occur annually on each highway. The roads that made the list are often high-traffic routes where accidents are more likely, making them especially risky for drivers.

Okay, with that established—when we talk about the most dangerous road in Maine, or the highway with more fatalities than any other, which road are we talking about?
According to ALOT Travel and their list highlighting ‘The Most Dangerous Road in Each State,’ their pick for Maine—based on the statistics, is U.S. Route 1.

ALOT Travel continues by noting that while U.S. Route 1 stretches over 500 miles and offers more scenic views than Interstate 95, it’s not without its dangers.
According to their data, U.S. Route 1 sees an average of 10 fatalities each year among drivers traveling along our coast. ALOT Travel also points out that over a 10-year period, the road saw 89 crashes and 99 fatalities.
And there you have it—the most dangerous highway in Maine, and the one with the most fatalities, is U.S. Route 1.
