A 19-year-old Fort Kent man was killed  when two motorcycles collided early Saturday in Fort Kent.

Police said that Colby Martin was traveling east on Route 161 on a 2009 Harley Davidson along with 22-year-old Donny McBreairty of St. John Plantation, who was driving a 2001 Harley Davidson.  Around 1:40 a.m., Martin tried to pass McBreairty at a high rate of speed, when he collided with the other motorcycle, causing both drivers to lose control.

Martin and McBreairty were thrown from their motorcycles, according to a press release from Fort Kent Police. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. McBreairty was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent to be treated for unspecified injuries.

Police said speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash. Maine State Police and Fort Kent Fire and Rescue assisted the Fort Kent Police Department at the scene.
