A 17-year-old St. Francis man hit a deer and rolled over his pickup Friday night with an 18-year-old passenger in the area of 1729 St. John Road in St. John Plantation.

Officials said the driver of the 2004 GMC Sierra was northbound when he was unable to avoid hitting the deer in the roadway - he lost control of the pickup after striking the deer, went off the road, and rolled over.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent by personal vehicle with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say excessive speed and driver inexperience are major contributing factors in the crash. The driver was issued a summons for imprudent speed.

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office received the 911 call around 10 pm. Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Erica Pelletier investigated the incident.

The truck was damaged and disabled and was towed away.

Names were not released.
