Each year the third Friday of September is POW/MIA day and the Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Caribou wants families of our lost soldiers to know their loved ones are not forgotten.

1970 marked the first official commemoration of POW/MIAs when the first national ceremony was held. The observance is one of six days of the year Congress has mandated flying of the POW/MIA flag, created by the National League of Families, at major military installations, national ceremonies, all post offices, VA medical facilities, the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the offices of the secretaries of state, defense and veterans affairs, the director of the selective services system and the White House.

This year's program begins on Friday, September 20th at 1:00pm.

The program and speaker introduction will be brought to you by Denis Madore.

Post colors: Sgt. Major Roger Felix presenting Loring Job Corps student honor guards and any other organization present with their colors.

The National Anthem and 'Amazing Grace' will be sung by Chloe Wheeler. The invocation and benediction will be read by Craig Faye DAV Post Chaplain.

Guest speakers will be welcomed by Harry Hafford, Chairman of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Corporation. Guest speakers are:

  • Phil Bosse, State Office Representative for US Senator Susan M. Collins.
  • Sharon Campbell, Regional Representative for US Senator Angus S. King, Jr.
  • Barbara Hayslett, District Representative for US Congressman Michael H. Michaud.

Friday's keynote speaker is Mr. Richard Fournier, State Commander DAV.

The Laying of the memorial wreath will be carried out by State Commander DAV Richard Fournier and Harry Hafford.

There'll be a 21 gun salute by the Legion Riders from Madawaska; American Legion Post #147.

Taps will be preformed by Fred Ormezzani; Member of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Corporation.

And closing remarks by Denis Madore.
