Small Town in Maine Named the Best ‘Hippie Town’ in the State
While Maine as a whole certainly enjoys its fair share of peace, love, and other hippie things, this small town was just named the best!
Listen, we get it—the word ‘hippie’ might be used a little loosely here, but hear us out. These towns aren’t exactly packed with VW buses or clouds of patchouli, but it’s 2025, not 1969—so whatever ‘hippie’ looks like today, that’s what this is all about.
That said, what exactly is a ‘hippie town,’ and what qualifies a place to be considered the best? What makes one town more ‘hippie’ than another?
Thrillist put together their list of ‘The Most Hippie Town in All 50 States’ by looking for places with strong countercultural vibes, from college towns full of free spirits to quiet communes and artsy enclaves. They leaned into the fun stereotypes and selected each town as the one that best represents that state’s hippie spirit.

Alright, with that cleared up, which small town in our Pine Tree State was recently named the most hippie town in Maine?
According to Thrillist and their report titled ‘The Most Hippie Town in All 50 States,' their pick for Maine is Unity. Located in Waldo County, Thrillist had the following to say about their selection:
“With a name like Unity, you’ve set the hippie bar pretty high. But this town lives up to it…”
Thrillist continues by saying that Unity earns its hippie reputation thanks in part to the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association and the popular Common Ground Country Fair.
It’s also home to Unity Environmental University—the first in the U.S. to base its entire curriculum on sustainability, which, as one of the most liberal arts schools in New England, naturally attracts a student body that tends to be a little more hippie.

So, now you know! If you’re looking for the best—or most hippie—town in all of Maine, it sounds like Unity is the place to be.
What are your thoughts on Thrillist’s groovy selection? Would you have picked a different town? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
