Injured Hiker Rescued & Flown by Helicopter to Hospital in Maine
A 71-year-old man was rescued after he collapsed while hiking in Carrabassett Valley.
Hiker Rescued after Collapsing on Trail
The Maine Warden Service said Gerard Jalbert from Falmouth “was hiking with a friend and returning back from hiking to the top of Redington Mountain when he collapsed on the trail” around 12:30 pm Wednesday.
Location Identified by Cell Phone
Jalbert’s friend called 911 and emergency crews found the exact location through the cell phone.
Two Rescue Teams Went Up the Mountain
Two rescue teams went up the mountain with one team hiking up the Appalachian trail on Crocker Mountain to access the Redington Trail. The other team drove ATVs on the Caribou Pond Road to an old snowmobile trail.
Forest Ranger Helicopter Airlifted Man to LifeFlight
Jalbert was located at 3:15 pm. A Maine Forest Service helicopter “was able to hoist him out of the woods, and transfer him to a waiting LifeFlight helicopter,” said Wardens.
Hiker Hospitalized
He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland and was listed in stable condition at the hospital.
