Firefighters from several departments responded to a call early in the morning. When they arrived at the scene they saw the entire building engulfed in fire. It took the crew several hours to put out the fire, but unfortunately not much was left of the building.

The building was build in 1920 and has been part of downtown since then.

“We are going to take this one day at a time,” Carl Theriault, Valley Auto owner, said from the scene Wednesday. “We just have to see what happens next.”

At this time, Fort Kent Fire Chief Edward Endee says they are not sure what caused the fire but are working on finding out.

Two Valley Auto employees were in the building when according to reports heard ‘a crackling noise’ and then the fire started.

When the community heard about the fire, people showed up and started pitching in and trying to pull out vehicles.

Nearly 150 pull together and more than 250 vehicles were salvaged. Glen Label, Fort Kent resident, who was helping said about his fellow residents: ‘You know, you usually see people running away from things like fire,” he said. “But the people here kept running inside to do what they could until the firemen told us to get out.’
