The Time to Prepare for Spring Flooding is Now!

Ongoing ice conditions, snowpack, streamflow, groundwater levels and flood risk were all topics of discussion as the River Flow Advisory Commission met this week.

The Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency has been keeping their eye on conditions throughout this winter season. The County agency has been conducting meetings and planning sessions throughout Aroostook and have made plans to bring assets in as needed. Emergency Management Agency Director Darren Woods stated, “This season is shaping up to be one of great concern for us."

Robert Lent with the Maine office of the U.S. Geological Survey said the potential for flooding is well above normal and will likely last a few weeks. "I don’t see any immediate threats, but we will need to watch conditions closely."

Residents are cautioned to be ready and should understand the hazards that they may face both at work and at home and have their own preparedness plans ready.  Even things such as sump pumps for getting water out of their basements should be considered. And if appropriate, homeowners should also consider flood insurance.
