A chain reaction panic led to at least ten people falling through thin ice on a lake in the mountains of Southern California. The video below shows how not to conduct a rescue.

The cries for help began when one man on a Christmas day snow tubing excursion fell through the ice. It was obvious the man was not a swimmer.  Others frantically tried to rescue him, but one-by-one they plunged into the icy water.

Within minutes of the first crack, nearly a dozen people were struggling for their lives in the frigid lake.

Members of the sledding party tossed ropes and inner tubes into the open water and eventually managed to pull everyone to shore. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.
