A 19-year-old Moncton man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for stabbing a taxi driver last fall in northwestern New Brunswick.

Jules Côté, originally from the Grand Falls area, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault in Edmundston Provincial Court on Monday.  He was sentenced in connection with a November 26 attack on a taxi driver outside a residence in Saint-Léonard.

The 58-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to the Edmundston Regional Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

In addition to seven years in prison, Côté was prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years following his release.
