McDonald’s ‘Expert’ Features Iconic Maine Location in New Video

The author of a book highlighting and documenting different locations from the fast-food giant around the world was recently in Maine.

You could joke about someone who visits McDonald’s all the time being a ‘guru’ or an ‘expert,’ but in his case, he’s actually more than that—he’s a literal expert.

McAtlas—created by James Beard Award-winning photographer and writer Gary He—is an independent visual social anthropology project that explores the world’s largest restaurant chain.

Without any endorsement or sponsorship from McDonald’s, He—known for his immersive, on-the-ground storytelling—shifted his focus from documenting iconic restaurants, political campaigns, and frontline hospitality workers to examining what he called the world’s most important restaurant.

Calling He a McDonald’s expert or ‘guru’ isn’t an exaggeration—his TikTok presence speaks for itself, with more than 20,000 followers and over 700,000 likes.

He travels the country showcasing unique McDonald’s locations, and in a recent video, he highlighted Maine’s most famous one.

On December 4th, He posted a video showcasing the McDonald’s in Freeport, telling the story of how locals didn’t want a ‘normal’ McDonald’s.

The town worried it would clash with the local aesthetic, so instead of using their standard design, McDonald’s adapted the building to match Freeport’s unique vibe, leading to what we have today.
