McDonald's announced in 2023 that it plans to gradually phase out self-serve soda fountains in dining rooms nationwide.
With the transition expected to be completed by 2032, customers will be required to request refills at the counter. The company said in a 2023 statement that the change is intended to create a more consistent experience for both customers and employees across all ordering methods, including delivery, the app, kiosks, drive-thru, and in-restaurant service.

The company has not said whether financial or health factors played a role, and told USA TODAY on May 4th that there is no new information to share.
