A 43-year-old man was arrested and charged after his girlfriend was shot in the head and died in South Berwick.

Warrant for Murder

Jeremiah Godfrey was taken into custody after a warrant for murder was executed in South Berwick on Wednesday around 12 pm.

Woman Shot in the Head

The Maine State Police said 37-year-old Sherri Sweet died from a gunshot wound to the head. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Domestic Dispute with Shots Fired

The South Berwick Police Department was called to Brattle Street for a domestic dispute with shots fired on March 22.

“Struggle for a Gun” during Argument

Godfrey called 911 after an argument with his girlfriend and “described a struggle for a gun, and Sweet sustained a gunshot and was unresponsive,” said Maine State Police.

Woman Died a Day Later

Sweet was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where she died on March 23.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South is leading the ongoing investigation.
