Maine Is the Worst State for Teachers in 2024
According to a recent report, unfortunately, our Pine Tree State is the worst in the country for teachers in 2024.
This is surprising because we truly love and appreciate our teachers here in Maine. We know they are undervalued, underpaid, and overall underappreciated. This ranking isn’t a reflection of our teachers themselves, because, again, they’re amazing, but rather of the challenges they face here.
How does one even determine which states are the best for teachers?
WalletHub ranked the ‘Best & Worst States for Teachers’ in 2024 by comparing the 50 states and Washington, D.C. across 24 key factors that impact teacher-friendliness. These factors include salary growth, pupil-to-teacher ratios, and state spending on students.
The states were evaluated in two main categories: ‘Opportunity & Competition’ and ‘Academic & Work Environment,’ with more weight given to salary and job security. After scoring each factor on a 100-point scale, WalletHub calculated an overall score to rank each state.
Unfortunately, in 2024, our Pine Tree State is ranked the worst in the country for educators.
WalletHub ranked Maine last overall (51st) in its list of ‘Best & Worst States for Teachers’ by comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Maine placed 50th in the ‘Opportunity & Competition’ category but did better in the ‘Academic & Work Environment’ category, ranking 20th. Unfortunately, Maine ranked 50th in terms of ‘Annual Salaries (Adjusted for Cost of Living).’
