UPDATE:  State Police say the man who shot himself with a flare gun Tuesday in Freeport is 65-year-old Daniel Abbott of Portland.  Abbott is being treated at Maine Medical Center for burns and injuries to his head. The two motorists who stopped and helped him was Jayson Forgues, 42, of Freeport and Paul Oleston, 48, of Topsham.   Forgues used his fire extinguisher to put the fire out in the cab and Oleston helped pull Abbott  to safety. The pickup had been modified to run on propane and troopers say if the fire had got out of control, the propane tank in the truck’s bed likely would have exploded.  The case is being investigated as an attempted suicide.

The incident took place inside a pickup truck alongside Interstate 295 in Freeport, near the Brunswick town line.  A small fire broke out in the cab of the truck and passersby put out the fire with fire extinguishers after they had pulled the man from the truck.

State Troopers said that the man shot himself in the head. No one else was involved in the incident.  The man’s name is being withheld until relatives are notified.  He is being treated at Maine Medical Center.

We'll have more details as they become available.
