Fifty-four-year-old Arthur Wilcox, Jr. was struck by a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle at around 6 p.m. on October 26 as agent Benny Hernandez was making a right turn into the station, according to a press release from Sgt. Shawn Newell of the Fort Fairfield Police Department.

Officer Dale Keegan of Fort Fairfield PD stated that Wilcox was wearing a black hat, black sweatshirt, and dark jeans, which made it extremely difficult for him to be seen at night.

Investigators also reported that “Wilcox was operating his bicycle on the wrong side of the roadway with no lighting on the bicycle and a damaged front bicycle reflector [and] crossed into the path of Agent Hernandez.”

Crown Ambulance transported Wilcox to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. He was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The Fort Fairfield Fire Department assisted Officer Keegan at the scene. The Maine State Police and the Maine Warden Service were requested to do reconstruction and forensic mapping of the crash.
