Women Injured and Two Cars Destroyed after Building Fire in Maine
A woman was injured and two cars were destroyed Tuesday after a fire at the former Schemengees Bar and Grille in Lewiston.
Large Fire Extinguished on Exterior of Building
The Lewiston Fire Department arrived on the scene to find a large fire on the outside of the building around 3:30 pm. Officials said the fire was spreading quickly to the interior of the building.
Firefighters Stopped the Fire from Spreading to the Interior
“Lewiston Fire personnel initiated an aggressive fire suppression effort and successfully stopped the fire from extending further into the structure,” according to Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.
Woman Injured and Taken to the Hospital for Care
A woman suffered burns and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment. Her injuries were non-life threatening, said Moss.
People Inside Building Got Out and Were Not Injured
The Lewiston Police Department said other people were in the building at the time of the fire and were able to escape unharmed.
Schemengees Bar and Grille in Lewiston
The building was the location of the worst mass shooting in Maine in 2023. It has recently been a warming center and second hand store run by Kaydenz Kitchen.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
The Maine Fire Marshals Office is investigating. The scene was being processed to determine the cause of the fire.
