Ice fishing is something that has been a part of my life since I was a child. I used to go ice fishing with my dad and uncles. We’d have hot dogs in the ice shack for lunch and trying to catch some fish while we were at it.

Lots of fishermen and women are anxious for the ice fishing derbies to begin, so they can not only catch that lunker, but also in hopes of winning the top cash prize that many derbies offer. I’ve come up with a small list of ice fishing derbies in our area.

  • The 8th Annual Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 26 & 27, 2013. The Derby Lakes are: Long, Cross, St. Froid, Square, Eagle, Glazier & Beau Lakes. Registration Fees: 14 & Older: $15/Day or $25/Weekend. 13 & Under: $5/Day. Weigh-In: Long Lake Sporting Club in Sinclair & Joe’s Country Store in St. Francis. Total Cash Prize Amount: $10,000!
  • Island Falls Ice Fishing Derby will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 16 & 17, 2013. Lakes include Pleasant Pond and Mattawamkeag Lake in Island Falls. Weigh-In: Jerry's Thriftway, Island Falls. Total Cash Prize Amount: $1,000!
  • There will be an ice fishing derby on East Grand Lake in support of Micah Bartlett on Sunday, February 17th from sunrise to sunset. Cost is $25 per person. You can register in advance by calling 1-207-646-0814. Prizes include $50 for the biggest lake trout, $50 for the biggest landlocked salmon, and $50 for the biggest brook trout.

I’m sure there are many other ice fishing derbies happening in our area. Click here to see more derbies from around the state. Please feel free to share more of them with us on facebook!
