Driver and Passenger Escape With Minor Injuries in Grand Isle Crash

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office says speed was likely a factor in a single-vehicle crash Monday on Main Street in Grand Isle.

Deputy Sheriff Jesse Belanger arrived at the scene shortly after 10:30 a.m. to find a 2006 Chevrolet Impala had gone off the road and struck a utility pole. The investigation determined that a 17-year-old boy from Van Buren was southbound on Main Street when he lost control of the car and crashed.

The teenage driver and a passenger were not wearing their seat belts and sustained minor injuries, police say. The driver was transported by ambulance to Cary Medical Center in Caribou as a precaution.

The crash remains under investigation but it appears that speed was a factor, according to Aroostook County Sheriff Shawn Gillen. Charges are likely.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Grand Isle Fire Department and the Van Buren Ambulance Service. The vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.
