A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for Attempted Murder in Waterville.
Sentenced for Trying to Kill Woman in Parking Lot
Irineu Goncalves from Revere, Massachusetts was convicted of trying to kill the mother of his three children in a parking lot of a Waterville hotel in June 2023.
Text Sent Man into Rage
Nicole Bernhardt told the court that a text from a male friend sent Goncalves into a rage.

Woman Lost Consciousness and Coughed Up Blood
Goncalves told Bernhardt “I am going to kill you this time” and choked her until she lost consciousness. She started coughing up blood, according to court records.
Man Attempted to Break Woman’s Neck and Hit Her Face
Prosecutors said Goncalves also tried to break her neck and hit her in the face.

Witnesses Tried to Stop the Assault
Several witnesses tried to stop the assault before police responded to the call.
Police Officer Assaulted
Goncalves then assaulted an officer who arrived on the scene.

Pleaded Guilty of Several Charges and Convicted of Attempted Murder
He pleaded guilty of aggravated assault and violating conditions of release. He was convicted of Attempted Murder, domestic violence, criminal threatening and assault on an officer.
