Thank you Mr. President for a three day weekend! Did you know that President’s Day was established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government?

Pretty neat stuff! It is also really the day that George Washington was born. According to History.com, the holiday became popularly known as President’s Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.

President’s Day is used by many patriotic and historical groups as a date for staging celebrations, reenactments and other events. I’m enjoying a day off today, and I hope you are too! But let’s not forget the reason why.
