Voters in five communities are going to the polls today to vote on the 2013-14 budget for M.S.A.D. # 1. The school budget proposal of $23,210,149 represents an increase of a quarter of a million dollars from last year. The school district which includes Presque Isle, Westfield, Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman faces a loss of nearly $500,000 in state aid next year. Medical insurance premiums for M.S.A.D. # 1 employees have shot up 13%, representing a $300,000 increase. And a proposed state law requiring local schools to pick up a portion of teacher retirement costs, could mean an additional $250,000 in the school districts annual expenditures.
Polls in the five communities remain open until 8:00 this evening.

RSU 29 has issued a reminder that polls are open today in Hammond from 4-6pm, Houlton from 8-8pm, Littleton from 10-6pm, and Monticello 10-6pm.
