The Maine State Police said a local resident found the human remains and contacted authorities.

The scene was being processed by Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit–North and members of the Evidence Response Team.

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification, according to WAGM News.
