For the history buffs: Maine used to be part of Massachusetts—but how many folks from the latter are now moving back to the former?

Listen, we totally get why folks from Massachusetts would want to make the move to Maine—it’s an easy transition between two pretty similar states. Both are in New England, both claim the Chickadee as their state bird, and hey, they even both start with the letter M—so if you’re going to relocate, why not keep it familiar?

So, how do we even know how many people are moving from one state to another, especially from Massachusetts to Maine?

We don’t have people stationed at the border counting every car that crosses into Maine—but we do have the U.S. Census Bureau. Using their 2022 data, Stacker compiled a list showing which states sent the most new residents to Maine, giving us the best snapshot available, even if it’s not an exact science.

With that in mind, just how many folks are trading in their vineyards for our whoopie pies and making the move from the Bay State to the Pine Tree State?

According to U.S. Census Bureau data compiled by Stacker, 8,663 people moved to Maine from Massachusetts in 2022, making up 20.82% of all new out-of-state residents. While Massachusetts ranked #1 for states sending the most people to Maine, Maine was only #8 on the list of states that Massachusetts residents moved to.
