NMCC and PI Kiwanians Celebrate Construction of Final Sinawik House
Aroostook County – On April 30th, members of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club will join students and employees from Northern Maine Community College to celebrate the near completion of the 38th home built through the collaboration between the two organizations.
For nearly four decades, NMCC and Sinawik (Kiwanis spelled backward), a for-profit organization founded by the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club, have partnered to build a house each year that is contracted by, and sold to, a local family. This year marks the last year for the Sinawik home project.
“The collaboration between Sinawik and the College has been important to our community and has provided a unique opportunity for home ownership at a reasonable cost,” according to Michelle Cushman President of Sinawik. “Sinawik is proud to have promoted the program, found the buyers and facilitated negotiations between the College and the homeowners.”
“It’s rewarding to know our work has contributed to the landscape of The County and we are grateful to have partnered with Sinawik on these successful projects,” explains Pam Buck, Department Chair of the Trade and Technical Occupations. “Now that our program is shifting from residential construction to Building Construction Technology, the projects and experience offered to our students need more flexibility to be able to include commercial or industrial construction training as well.”
According to NMCC President Tim Crowley, “The program has provided an important learning opportunity and a unique platform to showcase the exceptional skills of our students. Kiwanis has invested the proceeds back in the local community and for scholarships to select students who participated in the construction. We can look back at this program as a win-win for both organizations.”
The project begins with the Computer –Aided Drafting students who work on the design of the house. The Building Construction, Plumbing & Heating, and Welding & Metal Fabrication programs are completing the actual construction of the 1248 square-foot, three bedroom, two bath ranch-style home. The dwelling is built to be very energy efficient with insulation values of approximately R27 in the walls and R50 in the ceiling.
This year, the homeowners for Sinawik 38 are Carol and Bill White of Crouseville.
Once completed in the Building Construction Technology lab, the home will be moved to its permanent location on the Cross Road in Crouseville.
The group will gather at noon for a lunch and the award of student scholarships, followed by a tour of the Sinawik House.
