The New Brunswick RCMP's Major Crime Unit is investigating the death of a 27-year-old inmate at the Atlantic Institution in Renous as a homicide.

Members of the Blackville RCMP responded to the facility on Monday, shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to Cpl. Jullie Rogers-Marsh. Officials say an inmate had been badly injured in his cell. The man was taken to the infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

The RCMP's Major Crime Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation, Rogers-Marsh said. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The victim’s identity has not been released.
