Well, some items seem super obvious not to buy second-hand, like a mattress. I know I wouldn't be able to sleep on something that a stranger to me had slept on for God knows how long. Yes, mattresses and pillows made the list of ohhhhh no you don't.

When it's your juices that made the pillow yellow, that's different. I had a pillow for nearly 30 years until it pretty much disappeared. I was fine with that. But there's no way and no amount of pillowcases (or sheets for a mattress) that would make me comfortable with a used pillow or mattress.

Upholstered furniture is on the list of no-nos, but if you really want it - it's recommended to get it professionally cleaned. Anything upholstered can harbor all sorts of nasty things. It's especially a hard pass if you have any allergies to animals. Dander and hair can get embedded into upholstery and no amount of cleaning will help your allergies.
