If you’ve ever turned on the bathroom light in the middle of the night because you just had to go, and you spot a little earwig scurrying across the tile, you’re not alone in your jump scare!

These small pesky insects with pincers have become a common sight in the Maine wilderness but the last place you want to find them is in your bathroom. .

So why are these pesky guys taking shelter in the spot I take my bubble baths?

Why Earwigs Keep Sneaking Into Your Maine Bathroom

According to Key Pest Controlearwigs love moisture. They also love darkness and those are two things that your bathroom will give them. Think about it, the steam from your showers, wet, damp towels, and all the condensation around your sink or bathtubs give them an ideal room for the evening.

But where do they come from? Typically they live outside under leaves, rocks and mulch, but when it gets too dry or too hot, that’s when they take shelter in your bathroom.

They’re resourceful, slipping in through the tiniest cracks or holes you don’t even notice are there.

It may not seem like this at this point, but there is good news.

They aren’t dangerous and they don’t spread illness or disease that’s going to infect your plumbing or do permit damage to your home most of the time they’re just releasing the space until they find a more suitable shelter.

But that doesn’t mean we want them there.

Here are a couple tips I found to keep them out according to The Spruce:

  • Seal holes cracks or spaces they can side through in your windows baseboard's floors or doors.
  • Lower the moisture your bathroom is emitting, hang your towels, turn on fans or a dehumidifier
  • Use natural deterrents like diatomaceous (it's a powder) around the doorways to discourage them.
