Tell us more about Preacher

Preacher was a 4 year old Belgian Malinois.

According to WABI, Preacher and his handler, Russell were a certified patrol team. They served with the Maine State Police Tactial Team and Southern Field Troop. They trained together at the Maine State Police K9 Patrol School in 2023.

Preacher was shot during a standoff.

This happened in Portage Lake early on this month on February 3rd. They tried to save Preacher by undergoing emergency surgery but he sadly passed away early the next morning. He was surrounded by Sgt. Russell and fellow officers, as per the article.

What led to Officer Preacher losing his life?

This is a tragedy unfolded after the police responded to a domestic dispute. 29 year old Steven Righini opened fire when police attempted to arrest him. He tried to escape but was stopped by police. During the confrontation, he shot Preacher before being fatally shot by police.

The Maine State Police Colonel, William Ross called Preacher "a dedicated partner, protector, and hero,”  “Most people will never understand the sacrifices made by our K9 teams, but last night, Preacher made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others from harm.”

His handler and partner, Sgt Russell thanked the community for the support and outpour of love saying, “Continued Thanks for all the Love and Support that you all have shown to me and my family throughout this difficult time.”
