If you were thinking about heading to Mount Desert Island this Sunday to check out the foliage or enjoy hiking in the beautiful, forecasted weather (it is currently set to be sunny and in the upper 60's), you may either want to reconsider or check the traffic closures.

The MDI Marathon is back.

What is the MDI Marathon in Maine?

The Mount Desert Island Marathon, Half & Relay is North America’s premier destination road race. The award-winning course features miles of pristine terrain passing tranquil lakes, soaring mountains, sleepy Maine villages, and stunning seaside vistas —including Somes Sound, the only fjord on the Eastern Seaboard— all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Acadia National Park in peak fall foliage season. The Marathon and Team Relay start in the world-famous Bar Harbor, while the Half-Marathon starts in picturesque village of Northeast Harbor. All three races finish on the quiet side of MDI in the hardworking lobster fishing community of Southwest Harbor. - runmdi.org

With three different races, 2500 racers that will surely bring supporters along with them, and the racetrack being the entire island beginning in Bar Harbor, this weekend on MDI will certainly seem busier than usual.

New This Year to the MDI Marathon in Maine is a Festival

This marathon has been put on for 21-years and has received several accolades for its outstanding views and extraordinary course. To support businesses even further during the MDI Marathon, a festival will take place for the first time at the end of the race from 9am until 3pm. It will feature live music, beer, and several local vendors.

Mount Desert Island is always worth visiting, but this weekend it might take a marathon to get there.
