I am sure you probably already are aware of the general rules of the road about how young you can be to get behind the wheel. 16 years of age, according to Maine.gov.

But what about when you're well, ehem, older?

First of all, here’s the good news ladies and gentledudes, there’s no official "maximum age" for driving in Maine, according to Maine.gov. 

That’s right, no age cap.

You could be cruising down the Maine pike in your 80s or 90s as long as you’re still safe on the road. But before you rev that engine, let me break it down a bit.

Maine doesn't say you can't drive after a certain age but there are some pretty important rules to make sure everyone is safe when driving.

When you renew your license, the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will ask about your health and any medical conditions that might affect your ability to drive.

Regardless of how many candles you have on your birthday cake, Maine wants you to be safe! So, if you are pretty long in the tooth, the BMV may ask you to do a vision test during your renewal and in some cases, an actual driving skills test!

If you feel like your vision or reaction times aren’t what they used to be, it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor and get a second opinion before hitting the road.

What if you feel you are no longer ready to drive in Maine?

Let me make one thing clear: when I am at the age of where I am questioning if I should drive or not, I am going to make sure that not one ounce of shame comes into my body. So, if you are feeling that, don't. It's natural.
