A 32-year-old man was sentenced to 75 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in Maine.

Sentenced to 75 Months in Prison

Mohamud Abdullahi was also given three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen. Abdullahi pleaded guilty to the charges on August 19, 2024.

Reports of Shots Fired

Shots were fired on November 23, 2023 at the intersection of Commercial Street and Cross Street in Portland.

Man Fired Shots in the Air

A 911 call described “the suspect pulling a firearm from his waistband and firing two shots into the air before getting into a vehicle,” according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Casings Found and Security Cameras

Casings from a 9mm gun were recovered at the scene and Police used security camera footage from a nearby building to confirm the incident.

Suspect Tried to Flee from Police

The vehicle was soon located as it crossed the bridge into South Portland. Abdullahi tried to flee from officers, but was apprehended and taken into custody.

Gun Recovered from Front Lawn

Police recovered the firearm the following day. It was found in the front yard near where the vehicle was pulled over.

Prior Convictions Precluded Possessing Firearms

Abdullahi was precluded from possessing firearms because of his prior convictions for assault and aggravated criminal trespass in 2017, and unlawful drug trafficking in 2011, according to court records.

Lead Investigators

Investigating the case was the FBI, the Portland Police Department, and the South Portland Police Department.
