As 2025 winds down, Google has released its annual Year in Search report, highlighting the moments, people, and trends that saw the biggest spikes in online interest throughout the year.

The data covers searches from January 1 through November 25 and focuses on topics that surged compared to last year, not necessarily the most searched overall, but the ones that skyrocketed in popularity.

When looking specifically at results in the United States, Maine fans will notice a familiar name near the top. Cooper Flagg, the Newport-native basketball phenom and projected No. 1 NBA draft pick, ranked among the top three trending athletes of 2025, landing alongside Shedeur Sanders and Terence Crawford.

Google notes that trending athletes are those who saw significant spikes in search traffic due to major moments, headlines, or breakout performances, something Flagg had no shortage of this year.

Beyond sports, the top trending actor searches were Pedro Pascal, Maachi Barton, and Walton Goggins.

For movies, Google’s top five trending titles included “KPop Demon Hunters,” “Sinners,” “The Minecraft Movie,” “Happy Gilmore 2,” and “Thunderbolts*.” On the TV side, the shows gaining the most momentum in 2025 were “The Hunting Wives,” “The White Lotus,” “The Pitt,” “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” and “Squid Game.”

For Mainers, Flagg’s inclusion on the national list highlights just how much attention the 18-year-old hoops star captured across the country this year.
