Have You Ever Heard of Maine’s ‘Bangor-Style’ Pizza?
While Chicago and New York have their own distinct styles, they’re not alone! Apparently, our Pine Tree State has its own pizza ‘style.’

Pizza is kind of like beer in college—the best one is the one that’s in front of you. Sure, some slices are better than others, but let’s be honest, who’s really turning down pizza?
Alright, now that we’ve covered that—if you’ve never heard of ‘Bangor-Style’ pizza before, trust us, you’re not alone. So, where did this come from?
‘Bangor-Style’ pizza comes from Josh Scherer, the chef behind Good Mythical Morning and Mythical Kitchen, who created it as a joke in a TikTok video on Mythical Kitchen's page. In the video, Scherer parodies the trend of '(insert region)-style' pizza videos, using Bangor as his inspiration for a completely made-up style.
With that in mind, what exactly is on ‘Bangor-Style’ pizza? And why is it named after our Queen City of the East?
Scherer’s ‘Bangor-Style’ pizza is a complete joke, packed with bizarre toppings and plenty of made-up Maine facts. It starts with an unleavened crust, followed by piles of American cheese, yogurt as a ‘tangy white sauce,’ and lobster meat. To top it all off, Scherer finishes with mozzarella, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a sprinkle of peanuts, calling it a tribute to the city’s lumber industry—just one of many fake facts he casually drops throughout the video.
And there you have it! Regardless of how seriously it’s being presented—joke or not—we now have our own style of pizza.
What are your thoughts on Mythical Kitchen’s video demonstrating exactly what goes on a ‘Bangor-Style’ pizza? Is this something you’d try, or are we the only ones who think it looks really, really good? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
