Maine State Police Cruiser Engulfed in Flames after Crash
A Maine State Trooper was injured and a cruiser was engulfed in flames after crashing in a ditch during a police pursuit on Route 26 in Oxford on Tuesday.
Trooper and K-9 Crashed during Pursuit
K-9 Preacher was also in the vehicle and was not injured. Sgt. Russell had minor injuries due to the airbag.
Driver Fled from Police
The incident started around 11:11 pm when the Trooper tried to pull a vehicle over for excessive speed. The vehicle fled and went down Rabbit Valley Road.
Trooper in Pursuit before Crash
Sgt. Russell had his lights on and pursued the vehicle. Russell was unable to make a turn at the bottom of a hill and his cruiser left the road and went into a ditch.
Cruiser Nose Down in Ditch
“The cruiser rotated and ended up coming to rest nose down,” said Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.
Ammunition Exploded in Cruiser
Russell and Preacher made it out of the cruiser before it became “fully engulfed in flames and ammunition the vehicle exploded. The cruiser and all the equipment inside were a total loss,” said Moss.
Description of Driver’s Vehicle
The driver’s identity is not known. Police believe the vehicle was a mid-2000’s Chevy or GMC with a utility body on the back.
Crash Investigation
The Maine State Police said the crash is under investigation.
