With National Nurses Week beginning on May 6th, the folks at WalletHub, a personal finance website, released their annual report on the Best & Worst States for Nurses in 2023. The report compares the allure of the 50 states for nursing professionals, analyses two key dimensions (Opportunity & Competition, and Work Environment), and compared the states based on their performance in 20 other relevant metrics.

The criteria include monthly average starting salary for nurses, healthcare facilities per capita, nursing job openings per capita, the average number of work hours, and projected competition by 2030.

Our Pine Tree State emerged as the best state for nurses in New England, ranking 2nd in the nation overall, 9th in Opportunity & Competition, and 3rd in Work Environment. Maine also had the 2nd highest projected share of the elderly population by 2030 and the 3rd highest nursing job openings per capita.

Here’s the full breakdown of the nursing market in Maine:

  • 7th – Health-Care Facilities per Capita
  • 28th – Nurses per Capita
  • 2nd – Projected Share of Elderly Population by 2030
  • 3rd – Nursing Job Openings per Capita
  • 16th – Share of Best Nursing Homes
  • 20th – Projected Competition by 2030
  • 25th – Avg. Number of Work Hours

Among the New England states, New Hampshire secured the 5th position overall; standing at the 13th spot in Opportunity & Competition and 6th in Work Environment. Connecticut attained the 13th rank overall, with a 34th rank in Opportunity & Competition and 4th in Work Environment. Rhode Island achieved the 25th rank overall, with a 33rd rank in Opportunity & Competition and 18th in Work Environment. Massachusetts obtained the 29th rank overall, with a 44th rank in Opportunity & Competition and 8th in Work Environment. Vermont, on the other hand, secured the 42nd rank overall, with a 49th rank in Opportunity & Competition and 9th in Work Environment. 

Hawaii ranked as the worst state for Nurses in 2023, placing 50th overall, 50th in Opportunity & Competition, and 43rd in Work Environment.

WalletHub's report aims to assist new nursing graduates in identifying the best states to pursue their profession. National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 to May 12 to honor the contributions of nurses to the healthcare industry.
