PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine Labor Department is warning job seekers about a scam that uses false postings on the Maine Job Bank to trick them into buying prepaid debit cards.

The scammer tells the candidates to purchase a $60 "Green Dot" prepaid card and read the card code to him over the phone. The scammer tells the job seekers the prepaid card is to cover a uniform and training.

He then informs the job seeker to meet him at a local career center. But the scammer fails to show, leaving the victim $60 poorer.

Labor Department spokeswoman Julie Rabinowitz tells the Portland Press Herald at least six people have been taken in the manner. Nearly 150 have answered the ad.
