Maine is boring according to WalletHub. Okay, they weren't that explicit, but it was certainly implied in their updated list of "Most Fun States in 2024." Out of the 50 states, Maine ranked at an egregiously inaccurate 38th place. Sure, we are a little biased, but we are also not wrong. Before we pontificate, let's dive into how WalletHub reached its 50 conclusions.

Also, I'm just going to sporadically toss in a photo or two (evidence) proving why Maine deserves to be "more fun" than a measly 38th place. For example, above is Precipice Trail from Acadia National Park. How does a state with one of America's most beautiful and explored national parks NOT make it into the top 10 most fun states?! We had SO MUCH FUN ... AFTER we survived Precipice Trail.

Oh, look! It's a puffin cruise! Guess which contiguous US state you can only do that in? Yeah, Maine is the main answer.

Here is the method behind WalletHub's inaccurate madness.

In order to determine the most fun states in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key categories, “Entertainment & Recreation” and “Nightlife.”

We evaluated those categories using 26 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 indicating the greatest number and variety of fun and cost-effective options.

We then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.
