Maine Forest Rangers Extinguish Fire Left by Ice Fisherman

Ice fishing season is in full swing in the great state of Maine, but with that comes a lot of concern for safety.  Whether it be the thickness of the ice, operating a snowmobile under the influence of alcohol or even leaving a camp fire unattended.

According to Maine Fore Rangers, they were called to extinguish a fire in the town of Greenville recently.

They say it appears that a campfire started by ice fishermen on Fitzgerald Pond was not properly extinguished. It burned very deep into the ground for several days, requiring forest rangers to dig it out and pump water on it after cutting a hole in the ice.

Fitzgerald Pond is located between the base of Big Squaw Mountain and Moosehead Lake in Piscataquis County.
