A 12-year-old had severe burns and another juvenile was seriously injured after a pit fire in Topsham.

12-year-Old Severely Burned and Second Juvenile Injured after Starting Fire

The Topsham Police Department said “the juveniles were attempting to start a fire in a fire pit when gasoline was used to accelerate ignition.”

A Flash Fire Occurred and Gasoline was Spilled on the 12-Year-Old and Ignited

“An apparent flash fire occurred involving the gasoline can, resulting in fuel being spilled onto the injured 12-year-old juvenile and igniting,” according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Fire Happened in a Residential Area

The incident happened around 5:30 pm near a residence on Coot Lane.

Juvenile had Sever Burns and was Sitting on Porch when Police Arrived

When Officers responded to the scene, they found the 12-year-old boy sitting on the front porch with extensive burns.

12-Year-Old had Extensive Burns and was Taken to the Hospital and Transferred

The 12-year-old was rushed to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious burn injuries. He was then transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and remains in serious condition.

Second Juvenile Male Transported to a Local Hospital and Released

The other juvenile male was taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation. He was treated and released.

Ongoing Fire Investigation

The investigation remains open and is ongoing.
