The body of a 75-year-old woman was recovered inside a home Saturday after a fire destroyed the residence on Plains Road in Readfield.

Husband Escaped Fire Through Second-Floor Window

The woman's husband, 74-year-old Jerrold Wentworth, had escaped the fire from a second-floor window with the help from neighbors.

Wife was Still Inside the House

Wentworth told firefighters his wife was still inside.

Heavy Fire Prevented Rescue Attempt

“Due to heavy fire conditions, firefighters were unable to make entry to attempt a rescue,” said the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Woman’s Body Found in Home

Carolyn Wentworth’s body was located around 1:45 am Saturday morning in the area where she had been sleeping.

Positive Identification and Cause of Death

Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for a positive identification and to determine the cause of death.

Husband Taken to the Hospital in Serious Condition

The husband was in serious condition at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating

The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the fire.

Firefighters Battled the House Fire

The Readfield Fire Department responded to the fire at 421 Plains Road around 9:51 pm Friday night.

Officials returned to the scene on Saturday morning to gather additional evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
