"Effective immediately, all activities with respect to MDPV are illegal in Canada. MDPV has been classified in the same category of drugs as heroin and cocaine,’ said Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

Bath salts can be bought online and the drug comes in many colors and flavors. Drug users usually smoke it to get high. The drug causes extreme hallucinations, violent behavior, and paranoia.

After Aglukkaq made the announcement, several law enforcement agencies across Canada issued statements in support of the new law.

In the U.S. President Obama also signed a law banning, several drugs classified as extremely dangerous, bath salts was one of them.

But what impact would the banning of MDVP have on the scientific community that still uses the ingredient in various researches?

The Canadian government officials said that scientists can still used MDVP as long as they seek an exemption from the law.
