After a long wait for the weather to be just right Jonathan Trappe took to the skies from Caribou, Maine on his trans-Atlantic flight in a gondola carried only by helium balloons.
A handful of people have lost their lives attempting to cross the Atlantic in a balloon. Trappe is the first person to attempt a flight like this using only small helium balloons. The last person to attempt such a similar expedition was balloonist Colonel Joe Kittinger in 1984.
Trappe's reason for flying in a gondola is just incase he has to bail into the ocean. Trappe is at the mercy of the wind and landing safely anywhere in Europe would be great. So cross your fingers and wish him a safe and happy flight!
If you were at Trappe's launch this morning in Caribou and you've got some photos, we'd love to see them! If they're awesome we may even add them to this post! Share your photos with us on Facebook or send them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
