A total of 36 residents were displaced early Wednesday morning after a fire at Hilltop Apartments in Caribou.

911 Calls Reported Fire

The fire happened around 12:22 am at 19 Marshall Avenue with multiple 911 calls from tenants reporting the fire and smoke in the building’s hallway.

Activated Sprinkler and Smoke in Hallway

The Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department said crews found an activated sprinkler and smoke in the building when they arrived on the scene.

Tenants Evacuated from Apartment Building

Tenants were evacuating when firefighters arrived and the remaining tenants were evacuated from the building.

Overhead Sprinkler and Fire Extinguisher Put Out Fire

Fire crews determined the fire was put out by an overhead sprinkler and a tenant who used a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived.

Source of Fire Identified

“The source of the fire was identified as a malfunctioned battery powered string lights device, located in a decorative item in the hallway,” according to the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department.

Heated School Bus Used for Tenants

A heated school bus from RSU 39 was used to keep the tenants warm as crews worked.

No Injuries Reported and Extensive Water Damage

No injuries were reported. There was extensive water damage in the area of the fire.

Multiple Agencies Responded to Fire

Assisting in the response was the Caribou Police Department, the Caribou School Department and the Presque Isle Fire Department.
